Clog-free self-cleaning mechanism
The heart of the machine is a cylinder that acts as a filter element. It consists of alternating layers of fixed rings and moving rings with a gap in between. Two screws running through the cylinder transfer and compact the sludge through the cylinder, squeezing out the water.
An external driveshaft ensures the constant movement of the rings, creates an elegant and sophisticated self-cleaning function. At the same time, the precise guidance of the moving rings prevents their contact with the surface of the screws. This friction-less design greatly extends the lifetime of consumables. All while maintaining the typical screw press benefits such as ultra low energy and rinsing water consumption compared to alternatives.
Applicable for practically all sludge types – also highly fibrous or inorganic
The two screws rotate into each other, breaking up the solids while transferring and compacting them towards the outlet. This makes the machine close to impossible to block, even with highly fibrous or inorganic sludges that would be fatal for common screw presses and other dewatering machines.
Power and water saving
Power-saving operation
The screws inside the cylinder of the VOLUTE DUO™ rotate at a very low speed – approximately 2 to 4 rpm – and consume very little energy. It reduces the power consumption in kWh per ton of dry solids by up to 90% in comparison with a centrifugal dewatering machine.
Water-saving design
VOLUTE™ and VOLUTE DUO™ use the moving rings to create a unique self-cleaning mechanism to keep the filter element clean and “open”, whereas competing technologies use large amounts of (pressurized) rinsing water for this purpose. That explains the major savings in rinsing water consumption that VOLUTE™ offers.
Compared to a belt press and a centrifugal dewatering machine with the same throughput, a VOLUTE™ uses 90 to 95% less rinsing water.
Significantly extended lifespan of consumables reduces OPEX
The moving rings are driven by an external driveshaft to prevent contact with the screws, creating a friction-less design. This drastically extends the lifetime of consumable parts, resulting in an even better OPEX than our classic models already have.
No pre-thickening required
The machine’s design integrates both thickening and dewatering of the sludge, which allows processing of low-concentration sludges – having a TS of 0.5% or more – in a single machine without any pre-thickening system. This eliminates the costs for construction and operation of thickening and storage systems and reduces odors. On top, it reduces phosporus and nitrogen emmissions back into the waste water treatment plant, by dewatering the sludge when it’s as fresh as possible.

- Above throughput is calculated as approximate and may vary depending on sludge conditions. For model selection, please contact AMCON.
- The throughput of each model is based on a sludge cake with a dry solids content of 20% to 65%, depending on the sludge characteristics.
- There is no definite upper limit on inlet sludge concentration; however, the target sludge must be flowable.
- All the figures above are provided for the reference purpose only based on the standard design. The design may change without notice.

PROCESS FLOW
- 01
Inline Mixer
An inline mixer optimizes the contact between polymer and sludge to create better floccs at lower dosages. - 02
Flocculation Tank
Sludge and polymer are further mixed and agitated to build optimal floccs for VOLUTE DUO™. - 03
Cylinder Unit
In the first part of the cylinder unit - the thickening zone - the sludge is further thickened without much pressure being applied. In the second part of the cylinder unit - the dewatering zone - the pressure on the sludge is increased to squeeze out the water. - 04
Outlet for Dewatered Cake
The end plate applies additional pressure to the sludge to get it to its final dry solids content.
